Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

MNU-ICONS-EXPRESSIONS

In the name of our greatest leader for civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is also now known as a Day of Service. For some people, it’s a holiday and a much-needed day off. For others, it means celebrating the man who made so much possible for so many. And now, gratefully, it is also becoming a day to spend in the service of others.

I have always been taught that our greatest role on this earth is to serve others. I have had many great examples of this in my own family. My grandparents, my mother, and my aunt have always welcomed people into their homes who were experiencing hardship, have volunteered, lended a hand, given wise counsel, shared a meal, gave shelter, entertained and did whatever they could for whomever needed it. I think this day means that to me, in the spirit of honoring a man who lived his whole life in the service of others.

So even if you can’t spend the whole day building a house or feeding the hungry, do something for someone that makes their day easier, brighter and let’s them know that they are worth helping, they are thought of and there is someone who cares. Let us know what you did for your Day of Service – we want to know! And the best thing about it is that whatever you do, you will inevitably make yourself feel better, too.
