The 10-Minute Resolution for 2019

The 10-Minute Resolution for 2019:
Would you take ten minutes out of your day for yourself?

Friends, the madness of the holiday season is over. We are back to the normal hum of daily life. What have you been thinking you want to change in 2019? Would you consider the 10-Minute Resolution in this new year?

Setting goals for yourself is a good thing. The trick is to make them doable. First of all, there’s the usual things – lose weight, stop drinking, save money, take a trip. Seems like those are things we try every year. But here’s a fresh idea – how about taking ten minutes, every day, just for you? That’s not much, right? Ten minutes?

So think about it. Most days the alarm goes off, we jump out of bed and start rushing around or we obsessively check email and social media as soon as we wake up. Alternatively, we pull the covers back over our head and hit the snooze for ten more minutes. That’s time you could have made for yourself (rushing/checking likes) or given to yourself (snoozing) as a gift. How about skipping that as much as you can? Oh, and here’s some interesting information about that whole snooze thing:

Sleep researchers say that ten more minutes of snooze sleep isn’t beneficial to you. But ten minutes for yourself – where you could gather your thoughts for the day, think about and/or write down three things you are grateful for, or quietly meditate while you are still laying in bed – could make all the difference in your day. You can start it frantic or grumpy, or you can start it calm, grateful, or present. What do you think would work best for you?

Maybe your ten minutes are in the middle of the day during your lunch break. Take a short walk around your office building, tuck away into a conference room or get in your car and leave for thirty minutes. Or perhaps you take some time in the evening to sit in a quiet place and think about what went well today, or do your gratitude practice or something that you enjoy, like reading or walking your dog.

Certainly it’s okay to make some time for yourself, and take it. Everyone in your life who needs something from you can wait that long. Because it could change the course of your week, and certainly your new year. After all, it’s only 10 minutes. Who’s in??
