My New Usual’s 5 Best Mastectomy Bras

Find out the Things We Love at My New Usual

Have you just found out you need a mastectomy? Are you are still trying to work out all of the details, and feeling completely overwhelmed? We know, we’ve been there, too.

Something to consider, which won’t be top of mind until the date draws near, is buying the right kind of bras for each part of the journey. So we’re here to help, with a recommendation for every part of the process.

The first thing to look for is front closure bras. Your chest, back and arms will be sore, so you don’t want to be reaching around to try to hook a clasp. You also won’t want to raise your arms, so keep this in mind when considering sleepwear. Front buttons, soft fabrics.

Did you know: You might be able to get your post-surgery bra covered by your health insurance. Seems like a funny thing, but when they cost over $50, every little bit helps. Check in advance to see if that benefit is available to you.

Immediately post-surgery
This bra needs to be the big daddy of them all. It’s going to be pricey, but that’s because it’s so specialized. Here’s why: it needs to have maximum support and a place to hold drains. Bare Necessities offers a traditional version here.

Reconstruction
You need something soft and supportive. Your skin is going to hurt. You’ll likely need to change sizes, so get a few of the same once you know it works for you. Anaono’s Post-Surgical Bra may get you through more than one stage of the process.

Did you know: Nordstrom has a wonderful program to help you in any stage of your surgeries or healing process.

Healing
Incisions, stitches, scar tissue. All the things. Find something which helps give you support but also takes into consideration everything else going on around the area. It’s no easy feat, it’s different for everyone. You might have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince. We like Athleta’s variety.

Sleeping
Doctors often recommend to sleep in a bra during this process. It’s likely to make you feel more comfortable, not less. Something super-soft and wireless does the trick, like this one from Hanes.

Aftercare
Always wear a bra! Gravity is not your friend, and even with a perky new set of ladies, you want to keep them in the best shape as long as possible. Wear support for everything – normal days, workouts, sleeping. Here’s a great version from Under Armour.

So let us know your favorites, friends! The more we share what helps us, the easier we make the experience for those beginning the journey.
