Your Journey to a New Usual

Growing in This Time of Great Transformation

How are you doing in this time of endless change? Does it seem like you are on the way to a new New Usual? We will feel the effects of this time in history for years to come. It’s been pivotal in so many ways, from how we work to how we socialize to how we respond to crisis.

It hasn’t been little things, either. It’s big things, one after another, so quickly you don’t have time to process any of it. A pandemic, the heartbreaking loss of thousands of lives, mass unemployment, civic unrest, people divided and people united. Your only choice is to keep on going. One foot in front of the other, for one more day. For some, it’s an endless monotony of the same things, for others, it’s barely hanging on to jobs, feeding families, keeping their homes or slowly losing their sanity.

I’m feeling some of these things too, but I’m grateful to be okay and safe at home. Not everyone has this experience and I know it. As an immunocompromised person, I have to be extra careful. My husband is doing his best to keep me as safe as possible. I appreciate his concern and care, and I am always grateful for his steady love.

I’ve moved from being content at home with time to do the things I enjoy to maybe spiraling a bit. I’m cooking piles of long-forgotten recipes stashed in drawers, digging in the garden, reading stacks of books, writing several projects and spending time with my family.

I’m also organizing and reorganizing, working fretfully, sleeping fitfully and fighting anxiety. Surefire remedies to what ails me are exercise, sunshine and laughing with dear friends on weekly video calls. Maybe some wine. 🤩 Definitely happy doggy kisses and bear hugs from SuperHubs.

But we are all in the same boat in one form or another. Some of us are in very dire and scary circumstances, and but for the grace of God go I. So I spend time in meditation, in quiet and solitude, and I pray for the people I love, our country, for humanity.

This is a collective experience. We are going through this together in one form or fashion. We all know someone who has lost a job, or caught the virus, or worse. And it’s uncomfortable and sad and horrible. It might be terrifying. But change is also illuminating.

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new” -Socrates

It shows us who we really are or who we really want to be. We have the opportunity to do better, and we should. Because there is no reason why we can’t lend a hand, an ear or a heart to someone in need. In the end, we are all human. We all want to love and be loved. And there’s always room for compassion.
